The saxophonist and composer Shannon Mowday is a firework of a musician, and together with the ever-vital Bergen Big Band, she will deliver an unparalleled explosion of sound. Mowday's work for BBB, titled "Colourful Houses," draws threads from the colorful houses on Bryggen in Bergen to the equally vibrant Bo-Kaap area in Cape Town. Both locations have been important trading hubs, where both music and culture have been shaped by the many impressions and influences brought by the trading culture. South African Mowday is inspired by the musicians who remained in the country during apartheid. South African jazz, particularly Cape jazz from the Bo-Kaap area, unites a multitude of music and cultures, with influences from Europe, Islam, and the indigenous Khoisan people. Mowday grew up in this melting pot and carries with her the pulsating heart of the music she grew up with. Bergen Big Band is a driving force for innovative music and has initiated several newly composed works over the past 30 years. They have performed commissioned works at both Vossa Jazz and Nattjazz, alongside artists such as Terje Rypdal, John Surman, Lars Jansson, Knut Kristiansen, Andy Sheppard, and Marius Neset.
